Colonels stifle Lasers, pick up fifth straight win in Daytona finale

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Centre women's basketball shut down Lasell Thursday afternoon, winning 53-29 in their final game of the Daytona Beach Shootout.

The Colonels (8-1) limited the Lasers (2-7) to a mere 17.6 percent shooting overall, forcing 18 turnovers while allowing only nine made field goals. Lasell's 29 points is the fewest by a Centre opponent in at least 10 years.

The Lasers hit the game's first shot – a 3-pointer from Morgan Church – but went absolutely cold the rest of the opening quarter. Centre held Lasell without a field goal the rest period, taking a 13-4 advantage into the second.

Centre was outscored by a slight margin in the second, as the Lasers hung in the game by sinking a handful of free throws. The Colonels went into the half leading 22-15 despite their own sluggish effort on offense.

That turned around quickly in the third quarter, as Centre dropped 20 points while shooting 67 percent to put the game out of reach. Sophomore Kat Wilson (Suwanee, Ga.) was a perfect 4-for-4 and hit a pair of 3-pointers during the quarter, netting 10 of her team-high 16 points.

Centre coasted to its fifth consecutive victory in the fourth quarter, securing its eighth win to top last season's 7-19 overall record.

Junior Madison Rice (Knoxville, Tenn.) followed Wilson's 16 points with 10 of her own, shooting 5 of 6 while leading the team with eight rebounds. Wilson and sophomore Mikayla Fee (Seymour, Ind.) each totaled seven boards.

Senior guard Olivia Schad (Cincinnati) matched a career high with six assists and also recorded two of Centre's 10 steals.

As a team, the Colonels shot over 54 percent from inside the 3-point line, and finished with 42 rebounds to Lasell's 39.

The Colonels are off until Dec. 29-30, when they travel to Tennessee to take part in the Sewanee Holiday Classic. Centre meets Covenant Friday, Dec. 29, at 8 p.m. ET, and will face Wooster the following day at 2 p.m.
