MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Centre women's basketball dropped its fourth straight decision Sunday, as Rhodes won 75-62 behind a strong fourth quarter inside Mallory Gymnasium in Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play.
The Colonels (12-5, 3-4 SAA) surrendered 31 points in the final period to the host Lynx (12-5, 5-2), who shot 5-for-8 from long range while hitting all 12 free throws in the quarter to secure an otherwise close contest.
Both sides got off to a slow start in the opening period, shooting just 2 of 16 combined as Rhodes held a slight 4-2 edge by the first media break.
The Lynx built their lead up to 10-2, but eventually the Colonels reeled off a strong 19-6 stretch to grab their first lead midway through the second period. Senior guards Paige Kellam (Hebron, Ky.) and Olivia Schad (Cincinnati) led the charge with 12 combined points.
Centre maintained its lead into the half, leading by a 25-23 score.
The Colonels and Lynx each dropped 21 points in a high-scoring third quarter, as sophomore Kat Wilson (Suwanee, Ga.) led Centre with nine points and Kellam dished five assists.
Rhodes proved too much in the fourth quarter, though, scoring 31 points while converting a dozen free throws to seal the victory.
Kellam paced the Colonels with 14 points and a game-high nine assists.
Junior Abigail Stewart (LaGrange, Ky.) finished with eight points, 10 rebounds and a pair of blocks.
Centre shot 25 of 60 (42%) overall and an efficient 9 of 16 (56%) from 3-point range, but the Lynx held a massive edge with 21 free throws to the Colonels' three.
The Colonels face the same opponents next weekend, but will be back home inside Alumni Gymnasium. Centre meets Hendrix Jab. 26 at 6 p.m. ET.
