DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre women's basketball fell to visiting Oglethorpe Sunday afternoon, dropping the season series with a 65-52 defeat in Southern Athletic Association (SAA) action in Alumni Gymnasium.
The Colonels move to 14-9 overall and 5-8 in the SAA, while the SAA-leading Stormy Petrels improve to 18-6 and 11-2 in-conference.
Oglethorpe got out to a quick 7-0 lead barely 90 seconds into the game, and held an 11-point advantage later in the period at 18-7.
Centre went on a lengthy 12-0 run that spanned the first and second quarters, though, sparked by 3-pointer from sophomore Kat Wilson (Suwanee, Ga.) and a traditional 3-point play from junior Abigail Stewart (LaGrange, Ky.).
The Colonels would take their first lead of the game at 19-18 following a layup from senior Paige Kellam (Hebron, Ky.) near the second quarter's seven-minute mark.
Oglethorpe went on its own 7-0 run near the end of the period in response, and went into the half leading 29-24.
Both sides shot below 40 percent in the first half, but the Petrels hit 4 of 8 from long range to gain a slight edge in the box score. Centre's active defense accounted for eight steals in the opening half.
Much like they did to start the game, the Petrels opened the third quarter with a strong stretch to push their lead back to double figures.
Centre was outscored 20-8 throughout the period, as Oglethorpe hit 9 of 11 from the charity stripe.
After trailing by as many as 20, the Colonels continued to fight in the fourth quarter.
They pulled within 12 near the three-minute mark following a 3-pointer from senior Olivia Schad (Cincinnati), but the Petrels held on for their 10th win in 11 games.
Centre finished just above 35 percent shooting as a team, and committed 21 turnovers which Oglethorpe turned into 18 points.
Sophomore Mikayla Fee (Seymour, Ind.) was the lone Colonel in double figures, recording 11 points and five rebounds.
Centre closes the regular season against rival Sewanee next Saturday, Feb. 17, at 1 p.m. ET. The Colonels defeated the Tigers 70-63 when the teams met back in early December.
