Women's lacrosse tops Lynchburg 10-6

The Centre women's lacrosse team controlled the second half and ran its winning streak to seven games in a 10-6 victory over Lynchburg College on Wednesday in Lynchburg, Va.
Seniors Meg Hawthorne (Cary, N.C.) and Sarah Mastey (Chattanooga, Tenn.) again led the way for Centre, each scoring four goals in the game. Ellen Resinger (Louisville, Ky.) and Emily Madden (Louisville, Ky.) accounted for the Colonels' other two goals while Jacqueline Anderson (Louisville, Ky.) and Audrey Powers (Chattanooga, Tenn.) also picked up assists. Katherine Francis and Caroline Kirby topped Lynchburg with two goals each.
The game went back and forth throughout the first half with the two teams trading goals and Lynchburg holding a 3-2 lead after a goal in the closing seconds before halftime. Centre tied the game on a Mastey goal in the first minute of the second half, but Lynchburg went back up on a Kirby goal with 27 minutes left.
The Colonels took over from that point on, scoring three straight goals and seven of the next eight. Hawthorne and Mastey each scored three times during the stretch that saw Centre turn a 4-3 deficit into a 10-5 lead with less than three minutes to play.
The statistics remained mostly even with Centre taking 26 shots to Lynchburg's 25 and holding a 24-23 advantage in ground balls. Centre turned the ball over 21 times to Lynchburg's 25 while Lynchburg held a 10-8 edge in draw controls. Allison Eisner (Louisville, Ky.) made nine saves in goal for the Colonels while Hailey Bossert had 11 for Lynchburg.
Centre improves to 9-1 on the season while Lynchburg falls to 3-5. The Colonels now return to Southern Athletic Association play when they take a perfect 3-0 conference record on the road with games at Hendrix and Millsaps this weekend.
