Colonels Roll to 16-6 Victory over Piedmont in Season Opener

DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreColonels.com) – Three Colonels scored at least three goals to help the Centre women's lacrosse team earn a 16-6 triumph over visiting Piedmont in the 2017 season opener on Friday night at the South Campus Field. Centre improved to 1-0 with the win, while the Lions fall to 1-2.
Reigning Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Newcomer of the Year Hannah Bellamah (Loveland, Ohio) picked up right where she left off in 2016 when she paced the conference in goals scored, netting a game-high five goals on Friday night to go with an assist, a game-high four caused turnovers and six ground balls. The junior midfielder now has six career games with at least five goals.
Senior midfielder Ellen Resinger (Louisville, Ky.) and junior attackman Colleen Jackson (Gaithersburg, Md.) each recorded a hat trick in the win, while sophomore defender Abigail Tessitore (Greer, S.C.) and sophomore midfielder Hannah Hardy (Louisville, Ky.) each added two goals apiece. Resinger finished with a game-high eight draw controls, as well.
Freshman midfielder Abby Whitford (Dayton, Ohio) scored a free position goal in her debut for the Colonels.
Junior goaltender Natalie Marek (Louisville, Ky.) tallied six saves between the pipes for Centre.
Kayla Jones and Jenna Smith paced Piedmont with two goals apiece, while goalkeeper Blake Forest had a game-high 10 ground balls for the Lions.
The Colonels held advantages of 38-16 in shooting, 24-17 in ground balls and 15-9 in draw controls. Centre put together a 90.4 clearing percentage (19-of-21) compared to Piedmont's 76.5 percent (13-of-17).
The Colonels are right back in action tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 18 opening SAA play at Oglethorpe at 1 p.m. ET in Atlanta.
