MEMPHIS (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre women's lacrosse team was bested by first-place Rhodes by a score of 18-8 in a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) road contest on Saturday afternoon. The Colonels move to 10-5 on the season and 4-2 in SAA play, while the Lynx boost their records to 15-0 and 6-0, respectively.
Centre jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a pair of goals by junior midfielder Haden Gibbons (Chattanooga, Tenn.), but Rhodes would answer with eight consecutive scores to gain an 8-2 advantage late in the opening half.
The Colonels closed the half with a goal to shrink the deficit to 8-3 when sophomore defender Abigail Tessitore (Greer, S.C.) found the back of the net off the feed by sophomore attackman Colleen Jackson (Gaithersburg, Md.) with 17 ticks showing on the clock.
The two teams traded goals to begin the second period, before the Lynx recorded eight of the next nine scores to take a 17-5 lead with just over 12 minutes to play. Centre capped the game with three of the final four goals, including goals by Gibbons and Jackson.
Gibbons paced the Colonels with four goals followed by Jackson with a pair of scores. Sophomore midfielder Hannah Hardy (Louisville, Ky.) added two assists in the matchup, as well.
Maggie Rippeto led the Lynx with six goals on the afternoon while Kendall Cunningham added four goals and an assist.
Centre junior goaltender Natalie Marek (Louisville, Ky.) made a game-high 14 saves between the pipes for the Colonels.
Rhodes held a 39-26 shooting edge and a 30-26 advantage in ground balls. Centre tallied 14 draw controls compared to the Lynx's 13.
The Colonels cap the 2017 regular season with another SAA contest against Hendrix next Saturday, April 15 at 1pm ET in Danville.
