DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre women's lacrosse team used a 13-goal first half to pull away to an 18-9 victory over the Hendrix Warriors in the regular season finale on Senior Day.
Centre stormed out of the gates in the first half as junior Hannah Bellamah (Loveland, Ohio) scored the game's first goal just 40 seconds into the matchup. Bellamah assisted on a goal from junior Colleen Jackson (Gaithersburg, Md.) five minutes later. The run continued as sophomore Abigail Tessitore (Greer, S.C.) scored a pair of goals in a 60-second span. A goal from junior Haden Gibbons (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and the second goal of the game from Bellamah made it 6-0 Colonels to start the game.
After Hendrix's Morgan Dasch ended the streak, the Colonels went on another, this time scoring five straight. Gibbons and Bellamah each brought their goal totals to three for the game during this stretch, while seniors Ellen Resinger (Louisville, Ky.) and Emily Engdahl (Waukesha, Wis.) also got in on the scoring action.
Hendrix responded with a three-goal spurt, but Bellamah controlled the final four minutes of the half, scoring her fourth goal off the assist from freshman Abby Whitford and then assisting on another Jackson goal with 48 seconds remaining to give the Colonels a 13-4 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.
Bellamah scored her fifth and final goal in the opening minutes of the second half as the teams traded goals. Jackson converted a free position shot and then after two Hendrix goals, the Colonels scored two more goals of their own, courtesy of Gibbons and Whitford. Fittingly, the last Centre goal of the season came courtesy of a senior as Resinger put one in the net at the 6:24 mark to secure the 18-9 win.
Bellamah had one of her finest offensive games of the year, putting all five of her shots on goal into the net as well as recording a pair of assists.
In addition to her three goals, Resinger had a game high ten draw controls, finishing with more than the entire Hendrix team. For the game Centre held a 23-6 advantage over the Warriors in draw controls.
Junior Natalie Marek (Louisville, Ky.) recorded nine saves for the Colonels in goal and was also credited with two ground balls.
The Colonels finish the regular season with an 11-5 overall record and a 5-2 mark in the Southern Athletic Association, securing the fourth seed in the conference tournament. Centre will face five-seed Birmingham Southern in the opening round of the SAA Tournament on Apr. 21, with the winner advancing to face top seeded Rhodes in the semifinals.
