Lynx too much for Colonels in SAA title bout

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Centre women's lacrosse suffered a 24-14 defeat in the Southern Athletic Association Championship Sunday at Rhodes, closing the book on a memorable 2018 campaign.
The Colonels finish 15-3 overall, but two of those losses came against the four-time SAA champion Lynx, who will head to the NCAA Tournament with a 14-3 mark.
Sunday's meeting began much like the regular season affair earlier this month, with the teams trading early goals to start the game. Freshman Bella Tacogue (Louisville, Ky.) netted a free position goal midway through the opening period to give Centre a slight 5-4 lead.
But Rhodes, which ranks sixth in the nation in scoring, reeled off a five-goal spurt to take a 9-5 edge in a matter of minutes. A last-second score from senior Hannah Bellamah (Loveland, Ohio) made it 11-7 at the half.
Centre wouldn't get any closer in the second period, however, as another 4-0 run from the Lynx made it 17-9 and all but put the game out of reach.
Rhodes put 35 shots on goal throughout the game, and finished with 21 ground balls to Centre's 15. The Lynx also controlled 23 of 39 draw controls.
Senior goalie Natalie Marek (Louisville, Ky.) recorded 11 saves between the pipes.
Rhodes was led by Kendall Cunningham's career-best 11 goals, including six in the second half.
