DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreColonels.com) – Senior forward Destinie Graves (Lexington, Ky.) tallied a career-high four goals to lead the No. 22 Centre women's soccer team to a 7-0 triumph over Millsaps in a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) contest on Sunday afternoon at Hillside Field.
The Colonels celebrated senior day on Sunday with the win to improve to 12-1-2 on the season, including a 4-0-0 mark in SAA play, while the Majors fall to 1-10-1 overall and 0-4-0 in the conference.
Graves also matched a single-game school record with her four goals, set by Sarah Morgan (1998), Shire Morgan (1998) and Erin Menard (2005). She topped her previous career-high of three goals, which she achieved on two occasions, first in a 4-0 Elite Eight victory over Calvin last season before netting another hat trick in Centre's 4-0 win over Berry last Friday night.
Just over a minute after Graves' third goal, the senior found Downing for a goal to put the Colonels on top 4-0, before junior midfielder Amber Cowell (Culver, Ind.) extended Centre's advantage to 5-0 heading into half time with a goal off the feed by sophomore forward Keeghan Francis (Knoxville, Tenn.) in the 36th minute.
Graves wasted little time getting on the board in the second half, recording her fourth goal of the afternoon under two minutes in off the assist by junior midfielder Amy Dean (Cincinnati, Ohio).
Paynter closed the scoring frenzy on the day with her second goal of the season in the 56th minute.
Centre outshot the Majors 32-3 in the win, including a 20-2 edge in shots on goal. The Colonels also held a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Graves and Downing led the Colonels with seven shots apiece.
Senior goaltender Olivia Alford (Louisville, Ky.) made a pair of saves between the pipes for Centre, as the Colonels posted their 10th shutout victory of the season.
The Colonels close the regular season with three straight SAA road contests beginning with a matchup against Hendrix on Friday night in Conway, Ark. at 6 p.m. CT. Centre then travels to Memphis, Tenn. to battle Rhodes on Sunday afternoon, followed with the regular season finale at Sewanee on Saturday, Oct. 22.
