#18 Colonels draw with Wittenberg in season opener
DANVILLE, Ky. – The 18th-ranked Centre College women's soccer team will have to wait for their first winning decision of 2017 after battling visiting Wittenberg to a 0-0 draw Saturday evening. The double-overtime match was the first official Centre soccer match played at the brand new Andrew P. Amend Field.
Despite out-shooting the Tigers 24 to nine, the Colonels were unable to find the back of the net against Wittenberg keeper Hannah Wilson. Likewise, Centre goalie Sarah Youkilis (Lexington, Ky.) totaled five saves and a clean sheet in her first career start between the pipes.
The Colonels almost ended the match with a "Golden Goal" in the second extra time period, as Alana Hughes (Lexington, Ky.) nearly converted a header off a Hannah Sirkin (Alexander, N.C.) corner. Wilson came up with perhaps the biggest of her six saves, preserving the draw for the Tigers.
Sarah Sirkin (Alexander, N.C.) was active among the Centre forwards, totaling four shots.
All told, the Colonels put six of their shots on goal, and finished with nine corners to the Tigers' three.
Centre returns to action this Wednesday, hosting Franklin at 7:30 p.m. ET at Amend Field.
