Balte’s header gives Colonels 2-1 win at John Carroll

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – No. 18 Centre women's soccer defeated John Carroll in their first road match of the season Saturday afternoon, winning by a 2-1 margin.

The Colonels advance to 2-0-1 with the win, taking the Blue Streaks to 1-2-1 in what was their home opener.

Centre wasted little time putting John Carroll on its heels with a Meghan Paynter (Danville, Ky.) goal in the 8th minute. The score came off an assist by Kristin Dean (Liberty Township, Ohio), and was Paynter's first of the season and fourth of her career.

The Blue Streaks, who put eight shots on goal for the match, leveled the score before halftime with Justina Fortson's first goal of the season.

The two sides battled through a scoreless second half for more than 25 minutes, until sophomore forward Julia Balte (Atlanta) headed home the game-winning goal just minutes after entering the match.

Sophomore Alana Hughes (Lexington, Ky.), who sent in a pristine cross, and freshman Averi Faulk (Crestwood, Ky.) were credited with assists.

Senior Sarah Youkilis (Lexington, Ky.) was strong in goal for the Colonels, totaling a career-best seven saves. She now has 16 stops in three matches, sporting a 0.30 goals-against average.

Centre is back in action tomorrow (Sunday), traveling to face Otterbein for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
