Francis nets hat trick as Colonels pound Mountaineers in Tuesday night showdown

BEREA, Ky. – Centre women's soccer dominated in-state foe Berea Tuesday evening, winning by a lopsided 9-0 decision in a road match that featured a lengthy lightning delay near halftime.

The sizeable margin came just two days after the Colonels (4-2-1) filled up the net in a 7-0 victory against Wilmington. Berea falls to 0-5-0 with Tuesday's loss.

Centre, which defeated Berea by an identical score a season ago, was led by junior Keeghan Francis (Knoxville, Tenn.), who tallied her first career hat trick with three goals on five total shots.

Freshman Rachael Boule (West Barnstable, Mass.) opened the scoring in the 12th minute with an unassisted goal, and was followed soon after by sophomore Alana Hughes (Lexington, Ky.) off of sophomore Meghan Paynter's (Danville, Ky.) assist.

Francis then took over, scoring all three of her goals in a 12-minute span to give the visitors a 5-0 advantage. Her hat trick was Centre's first since former Colonel Destinie Graves scored four in a 7-0 victory against Millsaps Oct. 9 of last season.

The Colonels took a 6-0 lead into the break after Hughes potted her second of the night in the 37th minute.

Freshman Skylar Hargrove (Mayfield, Ky.) scored her first career goal off of sophomore Annika Struthwolf's (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) helper in the very early stages of the second period.

Sophomore Hannah Bandura finished Centre's scoring efforts with a pair of goals, marking her first multi-goal match. Senior Amber Cowell (Culver, Ind.) added an assist on Bandura's initial score.

Centre controlled possession to a remarkable extent, finishing with 31 shots while holding the Mountaineers to none.  

The Colonels step into Southern Athletics Association play Saturday, traveling to face Oglethorpe at 1 p.m. ET.
