ATLANTA – Centre College women's soccer started off the Southern Athletic Association slate on a high note Saturday afternoon, defeating Oglethorpe on the road, 4-0.
Goals by four different players lifted the Colonels to 5-2-1 overall and a 1-0 start in-conference. The host Stormy Petrels fall to 2-4 (0-1).
Centre finished with a remarkable 29 shots to Oglethorpe's one, and began attacking right out of the gates.
The Colonels first score came from junior forward Keeghan Francis (Knoxville, Tenn.), who substituted into the game less than two minutes before her goal in the 27th minute. Francis, who netted a hat trick in the last game, got an assist from sophomore Alana Hughes (Lexington, Ky.) on the score.
Centre led 1-0 going into the halftime break despite getting off 17 total shots, but its relentless attack eventually paid off with the three-goal second period.
Paynter then made it 3-0 in favor of the visitors with her second goal of the season, as Hughes contributed another assist.
Junior keeper Sarah Youkilis (Lexington, Ky.) faced only one shot as Centre's goalie, but it was off target.
Centre takes on non-conference opponent Piedmont Sunday at 1 p.m. ET in Demorest, Ga.
