Colonels topple Tigers 4-0, advance to 6th straight SAA Championship

Danville, KY – Centre women's soccer defeated Sewanee at Amend field on Friday afternoon, earning a 4-0 decision in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) semifinal.

The Colonels improve to 14-3-2 overall and advance to their 6th straight championship round on Sunday afternoon.

Centre and Sewanee remained deadlocked throughout most of the first half of play with both teams playing stingy defense.

Freshman Averi Faulk (Crestwood, Ky.) broke the tie in the 44th minute off of a corner kick, her first goal of the season, giving the Colonels a 1-0 advantage.

Despite only one goal in the first half, the Colonels continued to pressure the Tigers in the offensive end, pouring on three more goals in the second frame.

In the 55th minute junior Keeghan Francis (Knoxville, Tenn.) found the back of the net off of a Meghan Paynter (Danville, Ky.) and Alana Hughes (Lexington, Ky.) helper.

Senior Amber Cowell (Culver, Ind.) added to the Colonels lead in the 83rd minute on a break away, beating the Tigers keeper to the low corner. Six minutes later Cowell struck again off of a penalty kick, giving the Colonels a comfortable 4-0 lead.

The Colonels continually pressed their advantage in the offensive zone throughout the afternoon, tallying 17 shots compared to the visitors one.

Centre will host either Birmingham Southern or Hendrix in the Championship match this Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
