DANVILLE, Ky. – Only one program has ever won the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) women's soccer championship, and Sunday at Amend Field the Centre College Colonels ensured it would remain that way with a 2-1 victory over the Hendrix Warriors.
Since the conference's inception in 2012, the Colonels (15-3-2) have won all six tournament trophies, continuing the streak against a six-seed Hendrix (8-9-4) side that had dropped the two- and three-seed teams en route to the title match.
Although they had numerous scoring chances, the Colonels claimed the championship in large part due to sophomore Alana Hughes' brace. The Lexington, Ky., native scored in each half for Centre.
Her first goal came less than seven minutes into the match, as she made a defender miss near the baseline and sent the ball past the outstretched keeper to make it 1-0.
Hendrix would answer in the 23rd minute, when Hagan Griffith got behind Centre goalie Sarah Youkilis (Lexington, Ky.) and put away the goal.
The Colonels maintained possession for much of the second period, limiting the upset-minded Warriors' scoring opportunities.
Eventually, Hughes skated past a defender again and scored her second goal in the 49th minute. Freshman Rachael Boule (West Barnstable, Mass.) earned the assist on what would become the game-winning goal.
With the win, Centre earns the SAA's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament, marking its seventh straight trip.
The Colonels will learn their NCAA fate tomorrow (Monday) at 1 p.m. during the Division III Women's Soccer Selection Show. Fans can tune into the show here.
