Shots (on goal)
ADA, Ohio - The Centre women's soccer team surrendered a late goal in its opening round matchup in the NCAA Tournament against the Illinois Wesleyan Titans, losing by a score of 2-1.
The Titans were the aggressors early on, firing several shots that senior goalkeeper Sarah Youkilis (Lexington, Ky.) was able to deflect. Illinois Wesleyan finally got on the board 14 minutes into the contest as the Titans' Cameron Hindel scored on a breakaway.
The Centre defense clamped down late in the first half, with Youkilis making two more clutch saves. With ten seconds to go before halftime, freshman Rachael Boule (West Barnstable, Mass.) provided the equalizer for the Colonels as sophomore Alana Hughes (Lexington, Ky.) and freshman Abby Hegarty (Farmington Hills, Mich.) were credited with the assist on the play, giving Centre the momentum heading into the break.
In the second half, both teams had scoring chances in the opening minutes, but neither team could sneak one by the opposing goalkeeper. Youkilis made three more saves for the Colonels during this stretch. With ten minutes to go and the score tied, the Titans took the lead when Ellie Crabtree took a header pass off a corner kick and put it into the net to put Illinois Wesleyan up 2-1.
Youkilis kept the deficit at one goal after saving an Illinois Wesleyan penalty kick in the 83rd minute, but the Colonels were unable to threaten the rest of the way as the 2-1 deficit turned into the final score.
Illinois Wesleyan outshot Centre 19-11 for the game as Youkilis finished with nine saves.
Rachael Boule's goal marked her fourth of the season.
