Centre Wins First Conference Tournament Match Since 2011 With 8-1 Victory Over Millsaps

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (CentreColonels.com) – The sixth-seeded Centre women's tennis team earned its first postseason victory since the 2011 season with an 8-1 win over No. 3 seed Millsaps in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Tournament First Round on Friday morning at Old Fort Park.

The Colonels boosted their record to 9-7 on the season and advance to tomorrow's SAA Semifinals against Birmingham Southern at 9 a.m. CT. The Majors close the 2016 season with a 14-7 mark. Centre's last win in postseason action came in the 2011 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Tournament, when the Colonels topped Rhodes 5-4 in the first round.

On Friday, Centre jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after sweeping doubles competition. The duo of freshman Neha Rao (London, Ky.) and senior Casey Blair (Louisville, Ky.) picked up an 8-3 victory at the top spot. In addition, the tandems of junior Mary Chapin Snow (Elizabethtown, Ky.) and junior Courtney DeLong (Louisville, Ky.) as well as senior Kim Randall (Johns Creek, Ga.) and freshman Kenny Snow (Elizbethtown, Ky.) earned triumphs at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, respectively.

The Colonels then collected three more wins in singles play, as Rao earned a 6-4, 6-4 win at the No. 1 position, while Kenny Snow was victorious at No. 3 singles by a score of 6-2, 6-3 and Mary Chapin Snow bested her opponent 6-4, 7-5.

Matches at No. 5 and No. 6 singles were both retired.

Centre and the Panthers square off on Saturday, April 30 at 9 a.m. CT. for a spot in the SAA Tournament Championship.
