ASHLAND, Va. (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre women's tennis team split a pair of matchups to open its 2017 spring break trip over the weekend, defeating Randolph-Macon by a score of 7-2 after dropping a 7-2 decision at No. 24 Christopher Newport.

The Colonels move to 4-6 on the season with the split and will continue their trip on Monday evening taking on Washington College at 4 p.m. ET.

Sophomore Neha Rao (London, Ky.) earned a pair of triumphs against Christopher Newport, who came into the match ranked seventh in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic South rankings.

Rao and junior Aliza Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio) topped their opponent at top doubles by a score of 8-1 before Rao earned a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles over McKinney Harwood.

Williams dropped a three-set decision at No. 2 singles to Johanna Ranta-aho, the 36th-ranked player in the country and ninth-ranked singles player in the Atlantic South region.

Against Randolph-Macon, who came into the match 17th in the Atlantic South region, Rao would cap the weekend at 4-0 overall with wins at the top singles and doubles positions. The reigning Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Newcomer of the Year is 8-1 in doubles play against Division III opponents on the season.

Williams earned a 6-0, 6-3 triumph at No. 2 singles to improve to 8-1 against Division III foes this year.

Sophomore Abigail Kent (College Station, Texas) and senior Courtney DeLong (Louisville, Ky.) both went 2-0 in the Colonels' win at Randolph Macon including an 8-6 victory at No. 3 doubles.

In addition, freshman Zena Maddux (Hopkinsville, Ky.) collected a 6-3, 6-4 win at the No. 5 singles position.
