DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreColonels.com) - The Centre women's tennis team continued its winning ways on Sunday with a 6-0 triumph over visiting Oglethorpe in a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) matchup.
The Colonels, who sit ninth in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division III South Atlantic Regional Rankings, improved to 8-6 overall and 2-1 in conference play with the victory. The Stormy Petrels drop to 8-5 on the year and 1-2 in the SAA.
Centre started off the day with a strong showing in doubles competition, sweeping its three matches. The top doubles duo of sophomore Neha Rao (London, Ky.) and junior Aliza Williams (Cincinnati, Ohio) rolled to an 8-1 win. The pair is ranked sixth in the latest ITA Atlantic South Regional Doubles Rankings.
The No. 2 doubles squad of sophomores Abigail Kent (College Station, Texas) and Emily Zelichenok (Louisville, Ky.) picked up an 8-3 win, while the tandem of seniors Courtney DeLong (Louisville, Ky.) and Mary Chapin Snow (Elizabethtown, Ky.) collected an 8-6 victory at No. 3 doubles.
In singles action, Rao earned a 6-4, 6-2 win at the top position, followed by a match-clinching 6-1, 6-3 win by freshman Zena Maddux (Hopkinsville, Ky.) at No. 6 singles. Williams added a 6-3 6-0 triumph at No. 2 singles, good for her 13th singles victory of the season.
The Colonels return to action next Saturday, April 8 with another SAA contest at Millsaps beginning at 9am CT.
