Colonels defeat Pioneers in midweek dual match, 6-3

DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre women's tennis stepped into team dual match action Wednesday, defeating in-state rival Transylvania, 6-3, on the Colonels' home courts.

Coming off the ITA Regional Championships a weekend ago, the Colonels jumped out to a quick start in doubles, taking courts one and two to grab a 2-1 advantage.

The No. 2 doubles tandem of Zena Maddux (Hopkinsville, Ky.) and Kenny Snow (Elizabethtown, Ky.) defeated Transy's Anna Burch and Merrick Irwin, 8-1, in the first completed match.

Senior Aliza Williams (Cincinnati) and freshman Caroline Stallings (Clarksville, Md.) paired up to defeat the Pioneers' Lili Williams and Mary Grace Amato, 8-2, at No. 1 doubles. With the win, Williams moves into a tie for 10th all-time in doubles wins with teammate Neha Rao (London, Ky.), and extends her Division III doubles win streak in team dual matches to 16.

Transy got on the board with a victory in No. 3 doubles.

Centre would win the first three completed singles matches to secure the overall victory.

Maddux made quick work of Williams in the No. 3 singles bout, cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 decision.

The next point came at No. 2 singles, where Stallings similarly handled Transy's Amato, 6-1, 6-0, for her first collegiate dual match singles win.

Centre's Williams clinched the match, dropping Irwin in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, giving the Colonels their fifth and decisive point.

At No. 4 singles, Snow defeated the Pioneers' Lucy Herrington, 6-4, 6-0.

Transy picked up wins at Nos. 5 and 6, bringing the final tally to 6-3 in favor of the home side.

The Colonels are idle until their spring slate.
