Colonels compete at Bellarmine Invite; Rodenfels wins steeplechase
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Centre women's track and field team had a wrench thrown into their schedule courtesy of mother nature as the Bellarmine Invitational, set to take place over Friday and Saturday, was limited to Friday only. The Colonels performed well against the field mostly consisting of Division II teams, with a standout team performance in the 3000m steeplechase.
Junior Annie Rodenfels (Centerville, Ohio) had a dominant performance for the Colonels in her All-American event, the 3000m steeplechase, winning the race with a time of 10:46.26. In the same event, sophomore Courtney Gibson (Catlettsburg, Ky.) placed second overall with a time of 11:29.93 and freshman Alison Anderson (Hixson, Tenn.) finished with a time of 11:50.38 to take fourth place overall.
Sophomore Olivia Honaker (Brandenburg, Ky.) had a strong race in the women's 5k, placing third overall with a time of 19:20.38. Senior Marisa Moore (Glasgow, Ky.) finished immediately behind Honaker in 19:21.98, while freshman Emma Stowe (Huntsville, Ala.) finished seventh in the same race with a time of 19:51.26.
In the 4x400m relay, the team of senior Lydia Myers (Lenoxburg, Ky.), sophomores Erin Cunningham (Cecilia, Ky.) and Hannah Jazdzewski (Lexington, Ky.) and freshman Claire Ansman (Goshen, Ky.) finished third overall with a time of 4:31.51. Cunningham also finished seventh in the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:12.06.
In addition to her solid performance in the 5k, Honaker had another good day in the javelin, finishing fourth overall with a throw of 114-02. In other throwing events, sophomore Ashley Lewis (Decatur, Ga.) finished sixth overall in the discus with a throw of 104-02, while senior Aja Leachman (Louisville, Ky.) had a pair of eighth place finishes in both the discus and shot put.
The pole vault saw three separate top-8 performances by the Centre women, led by senior Sarah Hayhurst (Newburgh, Ind.), who finished third overall with a clear of 11-05.75. Hayhurst was followed by junior Taylor Singleton (Hendersonville, N.C.) at 10-06.00 and junior Cheyenne Bunner (Mars Hill, N.C.) at 8-06.25.
Senior Emily Winkler (Louisville, Ky.) continued her strong final campaign with the Colonels in the high jump, placing fourth by clearing 5-01.00. Sophomore Molly O'Dea (Louisville, Ky.) had another excellent triple jump, finishing fourth overall with a mark of 36-07.50.
Next up for the Colonels will be their final meet before the conference championships as they will host the Centre Twilight on Apr. 13.
