Colonels lead after opening day at SAA Championships
SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Centre women's track and field team sits in first place after an excellent opening day at the Southern Athletic Association Championships that saw the Colonels earn three different individual conference titles.
Centre ended Friday with 66.5 points through six scored events to take the lead after the first day of competition. Birmingham Southern and Rhodes are tied for second with 42 points.
The first event of the meet was the pole vault, an event where Centre was expected to put on one of its strongest performances, and the Colonels did not disappoint, with four of the eight scoring marks. Senior Sarah Hayhurst (Newburgh, Ind.) won the event with a clear of 11-05.00 for her fourth consecutive SAA pole vault title. Junior Taylor Singleton (Hendersonville, N.C.) finished third overall with a clear of 10-05.25, followed by sophomore Camille Mangold (Lexington, Ky.) in fourth and junior Cheyenne Bunner (Mars Hill, N.C.) in eighth.
Sophomore Molly O'Dea (Louisville, Ky.) picked up a point for the Colonels with an eighth place finish in the long jump and a mark of 16-00.50.
Senior Aja Leachman (Louisville, Ky.) repeated her 2017 conference championship finish in the shot put, posting a throw of 37-07.25 to take the win by less than a foot. Additionally, Leachman finished third overall in the hammer with a throw of 141-6. Sophomore Grace Bertram (Campbellsville, Ky.) finished eighth in the same event with a mark of 111-2.
In the 10k, SAA Cross Country Newcomer of the Year Hallie Searcy (Louisville, Ky.) finished second overall with a time of 38:28.30. Senior Marisa Moore (Glasgow, Ky.) also got on the board for the Colonels in the 10k, finishing eighth with a time of 40:56.08.
The final scored event of the day on Friday was the 3000m steeplechase and it provided the final individual conference title of the day for Centre as junior Annie Rodenfels (Centerville, Ohio) won the event with a time of 10:53.08. Centre had two more scoring times in the race as sophomore Courtney Gibson (Catlettsburg, Ky.) finished fourth with a time of 11:30.10 and freshman Alison Anderson (Hixson, Tenn.) finished sixth in 11:49.69.
