Colonels take second place at SAA women’s track championships
SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Centre women's track and field team wrapped up competition at the 2018 Southern Athletic Association Championships, finishing in second place with multiple individual conference championships to take home.
Centre finished with 127.5 points, 9.5 ahead of third place Birmingham Southern. Rhodes finished in first place for the meet.
The women's meet kicked off with the javelin and the Colonels had two scoring performances as sophomore Olivia Honaker (Brandenburg, Ky.) finished fifth with a mark of 120-4, while junior Cheyenne Bunner (Mars Hill, N.C.) finished eighth with a throw of 103-5. In the discus, senior Aja Leachman (Louisville, Ky.) posted a throw of 118-7, four feet shy of earning her third All-SAA honor of the meet as she finished fourth overall.
The women's triple jump saw the first individual conference title of the day for the Colonels as sophomore Molly O'Dea (Louisville, Ky.) picked up her first SAA title of her career with a mark of 37-03.25, breaking her own school record by an inch in the process. In the high jump, senior Emily Winkler (Louisville, Ky.) placed third with a clear of 5-03.75.
The next win for the Colonels on Saturday came in the 5k as junior Annie Rodenfels (Centerville, Ohio) picked up her second conference title of the meet with a first place time of 17:38.63, 18 seconds ahead of second place. Sophomore Courtney Gibson (Catlettsburg, Ky.) placed sixth in the same event with a time of 18:42.64. Rodenfels also finished second in the 800m with a time of 4:45.41, while freshman Alison Anderson (Hixson, Tenn.) finished seventh at just under five minutes. Rodenfels finished her day in the 800m, finishing fourth with a time of 2:22.48.
In relays, the 4x100m squad of sophomores Erin Cunningham (Cecilia, Ky.), Hannah Jazdzewski (Lexington, Ky.) and Shannon Russell (Atlanta) and freshman Claire Ansman (Goshen, Ky.) finished eighth with a time of 52.34. Ansman, Cunningham and Jazdzewski teamed with senior Lydia Myers (Lenoxburg, Ky.) to finished eighth in the 4x400 with a time of 4:21. Jazdzewski also got on the board as an individual, posting a time of 26.90 to finish second in the 200m.
In the 400m hurdles, Cunningham finished in sixth place with a time of 1:10.73.
