Centre Volleyball Opens 2016 with Split at Berea Tri-Match

BEREA, Ky. (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre volleyball began its season with a pair of matches at Berea University. The Colonels came away with a split, losing to Spalding in five sets and defeating Berea in straight sets.

Centre and Spalding alternated victories in the first four sets. The Colonels won the first set by a score of 25-19 before Spalding tied the match with a 25-20 win in the second set. Centre had another 25-19 victory in the third set but Spalding staved off defeat in the fourth set with a 25-14 win. The Golden Eagles then won the fifth set by a score of 15-12.

Junior Hailey Foote (Prospect, Ky.) led the Colonels in kills against Spalding with 15, with freshman Keeley Morton (Bristol, Tenn.) adding ten kills. Senior Shelby Foote (Prospect, Ky.) recorded 25 of Centre's 41 assists in the contest. Freshman Peyton Vacala (Savannah, Ga.) led six Colonels in double digit digs with 30.

Against Berea, the Colonels controlled the match. In the opening set, the Colonels won by a score of 25-18. The Mountaineers provided the biggest challenge in the second set, but the Colonels emerged victorious by a score of 25-23. Centre played its most dominant set of the day in the third set, closing the day with a 25-12 victory.

Keeley Morton led the way for Centre with seven kills. Shelby Foote once again paced the Colonels in assists with 17. Junior Morgan Babey (LaGrange, Ky.) finished with 19 digs to lead Centre, followed by Peyton Vacala with 16.

The next game for the Centre volleyball team will be on Sept. 7 as they face the Hanover Panthers on the road. The Colonels defeated the Panthers in four hard-fought sets in their 2015 matchup.
