Colonels Earn Split to Wrap up Washington & Lee Classic
LEXINGTON, Va. (CentreColonels.com) – The Washington & Lee Classic concluded play on Saturday afternoon as the Centre volleyball team played two more games. Just like they had done on Friday, the Colonels went 1-1 on the day, losing to St. Mary's (Md.) before defeating Randolph-Macon.
The Colonels lost to the St. Mary's (Md.) Seahawks in straight sets. Stats for that game will be available later.
Against Randolph-Macon, Centre jumped out to an 11-6 lead in the opening set as the Yellow Jackets never got any closer than three points the rest of the way. Leading 19-15, the Colonels scored six of the next eight points to win the set 25-17, with senior Shelby Foote (Prospect, Ky.) putting home the final kill. The Yellow Jackets would storm out of the gates in the second set, leading 7-1 early on. The Colonels clawed back and fought off three set points in a row, but after a timeout, Randolph-Macon would put home the set with a 25-23 win.
Trailing 12-8 in the third set, the Colonels stormed back, using a 7-0 run to take a 23-17 lead as freshmen Peyton Vacala (Savannah, Ga.) and Margaret Cowens (Memphis, Tenn.) each had two kills in the run. Much like in the previous set, it would be difficult for the winning team to record that 25th point, but after a 4-0 Yellow Jackets run, freshman Keeley Morton (Bristol, Tenn.) sealed the deal as the Colonels took the lead in the match with a 25-23 third set win. Centre scored the opening four points of the fourth set and while Randolph-Macon would eventually take the lead at 20-19, junior Hailey Foote (Prospect, Ky.) would close the match by scoring four of the Colonels' final five kills as Centre defeated the Jackets by a score of 25-22.
Hailey Foote topped the Colonels in kills with 11, led by Peyton Vacala with nine and Shelby Foote with eight. Shelby Foote also led Centre in assists, racking up 26. Senior Katherine Hagan (Whitesburg, Ky.) added 14 assists. Junior defensive specialist Morgan Babey (LaGrange, Ky.) led Centre with 14 digs while Hagan and Shelby Foote each recorded nine digs for the Colonels.
The Centre volleyball team will open Southern Athletic Association play at Sewanee on Tuesday before opening their home schedule over the weekend with games against Millsaps and Birmingham Southern.
