Colonels Open SAA Volleyball Slate with Wild Win at Sewanee
SEWANEE, Tenn. (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre volleyball team opened Southern Athletic Association play on Tuesday night with a trip to Juhan Gymnasium to battle the Sewanee Tigers. In a match that went back and forth, the Colonels prevailed 3-2 after a decisive fifth and final set.
The opening set saw Sewanee jump out to an early lead in front of the home crowd, but the Colonels collected themselves and took their first lead at 10-9. Centre would not trail the rest of the way as junior Hailey Foote (Prospect, Ky.) put home the final kill on the 25-22 win. The Tigers would use a 6-0 run early in the second set to take command and never look back, winning by a score of 25-16.
In the third set the Colonels would gradually pull ahead thanks to a slew of Sewanee errors, including a bad Tiger serve that would prove to be the deciding point as Centre won 25-21. Sewanee rebounded from the third set defeat to jump out to a 12-3 lead in the fourth set, and then hold off a Centre rally to force a fifth and deciding set with a 25-22 win.
The Colonels, who had gotten off to slow starts in each of the previous sets, stormed to a 10-1 lead in the final set as Hailey Foote had a kill and an ace to bookend the run. Freshman Peyton Vacala (Savannah, Ga.) finished the match with an ace as the Colonels dominated the fifth set by a score of 15-5.
Hailey Foote led all players with 11 kills in the match. Senior Shelby Foote (Prospect, Ky.) recorded 28 of Centre's 36 assists in the contest. Junior Morgan Babey (LaGrange, Ky.) finished with 21 digs as senior Katherine Hagan (Whitesburg, Ky.), Peyton Vacala and Shelby Foote each had double digit digs as well. Sophomore Lizzie Royster (Lincoln, Neb.) had her best game of the young season with nine kills, six block assists and four digs.
The Centre volleyball team will play its first home matches of the season over the weekend, taking on Millsaps on Saturday and Birmingham Southern on Sunday at Alumni Gym.
