DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreColonels.com) - The Centre volleyball team improved to 5-4 on the year and 2-0 in Southern Athletic Association play by winning its first home match of the young season. The Colonels defeated the Millsaps Majors in four sets, including a dramatic comeback in the fourth set.
Millsaps controlled the opening set of the match, scoring the first four points and jumping out to a 10-2 lead. The Colonels could get no closer than within five points the rest of the way as the Majors cruised to a 25-16 win.
In the second set the Colonels used a key 4-0 run midway through to take their first lead of the match, with junior Hailey Foote (Prospect, Ky.) picking up two critical kills. The Colonels scored the final three points of the set and won by a score of 25-16.
The third set was a back and forth affair with the lead changing hands five times. With Millsaps leading 14-13, the Colonels responded with three straight points, culminating with an ace by senior Shelby Foote (Prospect, Ky.). The Colonels would not surrender the lead again as Shelby Foote and sophomore Lizzie Royster (Lincoln, Neb.) combined for a block to provide the final point of the 25-19 victory.
The fourth set looked to be a repeat of the first set with the Majors leading throughout. Millsaps jumped out to a 12-3 lead early on but the Colonels clawed back. Trailing 23-16 and just two points away from forcing a decisive fifth set, Centre responded with five consecutive points. Millsaps forced a set point at 24-21, but Hailey Foote, Lizzie Royster and freshman Keeley Morton (Bristol, Tenn.) recorded consecutive kills to tie the score. Millsaps rebounded to force another set point at 26-25, but senior Katherine Hagan (Whitesburg, Ky.) recorded three kills in a row to put away the set and the match with a 28-26 fourth set win.
Hailey Foote led Centre with 16 kills while freshman Peyton Vacala (Savannah, Ga.) added seven kills. Shelby Foote and Katherine Hagan combined for all 37 of Centre's assists, with Foote leading the way with 21. Junior Morgan Babey (LaGrange, Ky.) paced the Colonels with 21 digs, while Peyton Vacala recorded 14 digs.
The Centre volleyball team will return to action on Sunday with a noon game against the Panthers of Birmingham Southern.
