Centre Volleyball Win Streak Snapped in Loss to BSC
DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreColonels.com) - The Centre volleyball team's three-match winning streak came to an end on Sunday, falling to the Birmingham Southern Panthers in straight sets and dropping the Colonels to 2-1 in Southern Athletic Association play.
The opening set unfolded in a similar fashion to the opening set of Centre's previous match against Millsaps on Saturday, as the Colonels fell behind early and were unable to gain any momentum as the Panthers pulled away to a 25-12 win.
In the second set, the Colonels kept it closer as the lead changed hands four times early on. Birmingham Southern scored the last five points of the set to turn a 20-15 lead into a 25-15 win.
The Colonels used a 4-0 run to take an early lead of 8-6 on BSC in the third set, but the Panthers responded with two separate runs of four consecutive points to take the lead. The Colonels cut the Panthers' lead to a single point two different times but could not get over the hump. Centre fought off a pair of match points but Birmingham converted on the third for a hard fought 25-21 third set victory.
Junior Hailey Foote (Prospect, Ky.) led the way for the Colonels with eight kills in the match. Senior Shelby Foote (Prospect, Ky.) topped Centre with 14 of the team's 21 assists. Junior Morgan Babey (LaGrange, Ky.) recorded 15 digs to lead the Colonels, with senior Katherine Hagan (Whitesburg, Ky.) adding ten digs.
The Centre volleyball team will take to the road in the state of Georgia next weekend, taking on Oglethorpe on Saturday and Berry on Sunday.
