Centre Volleyball Rallies to Defeat Oglethorpe 3-2

ATLANTA (CentreColonels.com) – After dropping their first two sets, the Centre volleyball team overcame its largest deficit of the season, rallying for a road win over the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels in five sets.

The Colonels held a small lead throughout the opening set and stretched it to 20-14, but after an Oglethorpe timeout, the Petrels rallied to tie the score at 23. Centre would score the next point, but Oglethorpe fought off the set point and scored the next two points to win 26-24.

In the second set it would be the Petrels who grabbed the early lead, leading by as much as 18-13. The Colonels rallied to tie the set at 18-18 thanks to the serving of freshman Peyton Vacala (Savannah, Ga.) and would eventually take a 21-19 lead, but Oglethorpe withstood the charge and won the set 25-23 to force the Colonels to the brink.

The third set would be a back and forth affair as Centre would eventually pull away to a 25-21 win to extend the match, with Peyton Vacala putting home the final two points.

With their backs still against the wall, the Colonels broke a 15-15 tie in the fourth set with a 4-0 run, once again keyed by the serving of Vacala. Oglethorpe would not get to within three points of Centre the rest of the way as Centre forced a decisive fifth set with a 25-21 win.

Centre jumped out to a 9-5 lead in the fifth set. Like they had done many times before in the match, Oglethorpe rallied after a timeout and eventually tied the score at 13-13. Facing a match point, the Colonels tied the score with a key block from senior Shelby Foote (Prospect, Ky.) and sophomore Lizzie Royster (Lincoln, Neb.). A kill by freshman Keeley Morton (Bristol, Tenn.) gave Centre its first match point of the contest and senior Katherine Hagan (Whitesville, Ky.) gave the Colonels an 18-16 win with an ace.

Junior Hailey Foote (Prospect, Ky.) paced the Colonels with 12 kills, while Shelby Foote, Keeley Morton and Peyton Vacala each adding nine kills. Shelby Foote recorded 34 of the team's 49 assists in the match. Junior Morgan Babey (LaGrange, Ky.) and Peyton Vacala each led Centre with 24 digs. Shelby Foote recorded 23 digs, while Katherine Hagan added 16 digs for the Colonels.

The Colonels will stay in Georgia for the weekend as they will head to Berry on Sunday for a tri-match against the home standing Vikings as well as Virginia Wesleyan.
