Centre Volleyball Drops Tri-Match at Berry

ROME, Ga. (CentreColonels.com) – Fresh off of a dramatic win at Oglethorpe, the Centre volleyball team remained in the state of Georgia to take on Berry and Virginia Wesleyan in a tri-match. The Colonels dropped both matches in straight sets.

In the opening set against Berry, the Vikings used an 8-1 run to break open what had been a close set. The Colonels closed to within two points, but Berry responded with a 5-0 run to win the set 25-18.

The second set played out in a similar fashion with Berry breaking open a close contest midway through the set. The Colonels fought back and facing set point, Centre responded with four straight points. Centre was unable to get the fifth point to extend the set and the Vikings won by a score of 25-23.

Berry jumped out to a big lead right away in the third set, taking advantage of Centre errors to go up by as much as 20-10. Centre made a small rally but the deficit proved to be too much as the Vikings closed out the match with a 25-18 victory.

Senior Katherine Hagan (Whitesville, Ky.) led the way with ten kills for the Colonels. Senior Shelby Foote (Prospect, Ky.) recorded 27 of Centre's 29 assists in the match. Junior Morgan Babey (LaGrange, Ky.) paced Centre with 14 digs, with freshman Peyton Vacala (Savannah, Ga.) adding 13 digs and Katherine Hagan adding 12.

Virginia Wesleyan used a 7-1 run to jump out against the Colonels in the opening set of the second match, and then scored the final six points of the set to come away with a 25-13 win.

In the second set, the Colonels surged ahead to a 10-4 lead in the early going, but VWC gradually chipped away, eventually tying the set at 22-22 and winning by a score of 25-22.

The third set played out in the opposite manner of the second as the Marlins jumped out to a 16-5 lead. Centre continued to battle, but the 11-point lead proved to be too much of a hole as the Colonels' closing rally fell just short in a 25-22 defeat.

Peyton Vacala topped the Colonels with eight kills against VWC, while junior Hailey Foote (Prospect, Ky.) added six kills. Shelby Foote once again led Centre in assists with 20, giving her 47 for the day. Morgan Babey finished the contest with 20 digs to lead Centre while Katherine Hagan had seven digs.

The Colonels will travel to Franklin for a mid-week contest on Wednesday before returning home for seven straight matches to open October. Centre will host nationally ranked Hendrix on Saturday and Rhodes on Sunday.
