Colonels Drop SAA Road Volleyball Tilt at BSC
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (CentreColonels.com) – Fresh off of a tri-match split the previous day at Millsaps, the Centre volleyball team did not have long to rest as they headed to Birmingham Southern to take on the Panthers. The Colonels lost to the Panthers in straight sets.
The Colonels and Panthers played an extremely tight opening set with neither team managing to create breathing room for the better part of the contest. Centre took a 20-17 lead but BSC scored the next seven points to force a set point. Freshman Peyton Vacala (Savannah, Ga.) kept the set alive with a kill but the Panthers would take the next point to take the set 25-21.
In the second set, Birmingham Southern jumped out to a 9-3 lead and never looked back, never leading by less than four points the rest of the way as the Panthers rolled to a 25-12 win.
The third set saw the Panthers once again start strong as they went up 13-7 in the early stages. Centre would continue to scrap, but could only cut the lead to three points. BSC forced Centre into a match point at 24-19 but junior Hailey Foote (Prospect, Ky.) extended the match with a kill. Centre added one more point but the run would stop there as BSC put home the final kill in the 25-21 victory.
Hailey Foote led Centre with eight kills, followed by freshman Margaret Cowens (Memphis, Tenn.) with seven. Seniors Shelby Foote (Prospect, Ky.) and Katherine Hagan (Whitesville, Ky.) each paced the Colonels with 12 assists. Junior Morgan Babey (LaGrange, Ky.) recorded a team high 14 digs in the contest, with Katherine Hagan adding 11 digs.
