Colonels Drop Regular Season Finale at Rhodes
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre volleyball game wrapped up its regular season with a trip to Mallory Gym to take on the Rhodes Lynx. The Colonels lost the match in straight sets, dropping the team to 7-7 in Southern Athletic Association play and securing the fifth seed in the upcoming SAA Tournament.
The opening set got off to an ominous start as Rhodes fired off consecutive aces. Rhodes jumped out to a 13-5 lead and did not trail by less than seven points the rest of the way en route to a 25-15 victory.
In the second set, Rhodes used an early 7-0 run to take the lead and kept the Colonels at bay for the rest of the set. Centre never scored more than three points in a row for the entire set as Rhodes pulled away to a 25-19 win.
The third set saw Rhodes gradually build their lead with small strings of consecutive points, responding to every Centre point with a run. Rhodes's biggest lead would be their last as they put the match away with a 25-13 final set victory. Efficiency was the story of the game as Rhodes committed only 11 errors during the entire match, compared to 26 for the Colonels.
Junior Hailey Foote (Prospect, Ky.) put in a game high ten kills for the Colonels. Senior Shelby Foote finished with 21 assists, also a game high for either team. Hailey Foote, Shelby Foote and senior Katherine Hagan (Whitesville, Ky.) each paced the Colonels with nine digs in the match.
The Colonels wrapped up their 2016 regular season with a 12-14 record and a 7-7 mark in SAA play. The team will travel to Hendrix in two weeks to compete in the SAA Tournament and their opponent in the opening round will be their opponent from today as Rhodes, also with a 7-7 record in conference contests, clinched the fourth seed in the conference with their win over the Colonels today.
