Centre Volleyball Suffers First Loss of Season at Hanover
HANOVER, Ind. – The Centre volleyball team traveled to Hanover to face the home standing Panthers with the hopes of improving to 3-0 on the year, but the Colonels fell to 2-1 after losing to Hanover in straight sets.
Hanover held a small lead through the opening set but Centre rallied to tie the score on three separate occasions on kills by sophomore Peyton Vacala (Savannah, Ga.) and senior Hailey Foote. Centre tied it once more at 19-19, but Hanover scored six of the next nine points to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Centre took advantage of Hanover miscues early in the second set, going up 10-6 on a kill by sophomore Bailey Vernon (Old Hickory, Tenn.), but an 11-1 run by the Panthers put the Colonels in a hole from which they could not escape, eventually falling by a score of 25-16.
The final set was the most competitive one as the Colonels held the early advantage with freshman Savanna Roper (Hendersonville, N.C.) providing four early kills. Hanover went on a 9-2 run to take a 21-16 lead, but Centre battled back, tying the score at 23-23 after a Foote ace and a tandem block by Roper and Vacala, but the Panthers came away with the final two kills to take the set and the match.
Savanna Roper led the way for Centre with a career high 11 kills and an outstanding hitting percentage of .409 for the match. Freshman Kylie Cochran (Buckner, Ky.) posted a game high 28 assists, and also led the Colonels with 11 digs in the match.
The Colonels will remain in Hanover on Saturday as they take on Franklin and Ohio Wesleyan in a morning doubleheader.
