Colonels Split Doubleheader at Hanover
HANOVER, Ind. – The Centre volleyball team played a Saturday morning doubleheader in tournament action at Hanover College. The Colonels defeated Franklin in an epic five-set thriller before losing to Ohio Wesleyan in straight sets.
Against Franklin, both teams pushed their opponents to the limit and beyond, with two sets going into extra points. In the first set, Centre grabbed a 22-14 lead and pushed the Grizzlies to a set point at 24-18, but Franklin pushed to tie the score with six consecutive points. However sophomore Keeley Morton (Bristol, Tenn.) stopped the momentum with a kill and the Colonels took a 26-24 win after a Franklin error.
Centre scored the first five points of the second set, but Franklin regrouped to take a 20-15 lead. Trailing by five, Centre scored the next seven points and Morton once again put home the final kill in a 25-23 win.
Needing one more set to win the match, the Colonels never got the momentum in the third set, falling behind early and losing by a score of 25-12.
The fourth set looked to be a replay of the third with Franklin taking a quick seven-point lead, but Centre rallied to take the lead halfway through the set. Franklin stopped the run and held on for a 25-22 win to push the match to a fifth and final set.
Franklin once again built an early lead in the final set, but the Colonels stormed back with a 9-1 run, helped by the serving of senior Zoe Doubles (Troutville, Va.). The Grizzlies managed to tie the score on three separate occasions, but freshman Savanna Roper (Hendersonville, N.C.) put Centre in front with a kill and a tandem block by Morton and sophomore Bailey Vernon (Old Hickory, Tenn.) put the match away for Centre as the Colonels won by a score of 17-15.
Sophomore Peyton Vacala (Savannah, Ga.) had a game high 14 kills, with Roper adding ten kills. Freshman Kylie Cochran (Buckner, Ky.) led the Colonels with 29 of the team's 39 assists. Senior Morgan Babey (LaGrange, Ky.) paced the Colonels with 20 digs as Vacala, Cochran and junior Savannah Guenther (Mount Dora, Fla.) all recording double digit digs.
In the second match of the day, Ohio Wesleyan built an early lead and held it before four straight kills from Centre put the Colonels up 15-14. The Battling Bishops would score the next four points and the Colonels could not come closer than two points the rest of the way, eventually losing by a score of 25-21.
The second set saw OWU utilize a 7-0 run early on to break open the set, pulling away for a 25-15 win.
Centre again dug a deep hole at the start of third set as Ohio Wesleyan jumped ahead 12-4 and never looked back, winning the third set 25-15 to take the match.
Keeley Morton led Centre with nine kills in the second half of the doubleheader. Kylie Cochran dished out all but two of Centre's 23 assists. Morgan Babey picked up a game high 18 digs, with Savannah Guenther adding ten digs.
The Colonels will stay on the road next week as they travel to Cincinnati to face Mount St. Joseph on Wednesday.
