Centre volleyball suffers five-set defeat at Rhodes
MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Centre volleyball dropped a heartbreaking five-set match at Rhodes Sunday, falling 3-2 (22-25, 26-24, 25-20, 15-25, 15-12) in Southern Athletics Association action.
The Colonels drop to 3-6 overall and 0-2 in-conference, while the Lynx move to 7-4 (2-1).
Sunday's match had a total of 30 ties and 17 lead changes, and was tightly contested right out of the gate.
The Colonels prevailed in the opening set on a late 4-1 run with the set tied at 21. Both sides combined to hit above .200, but Centre's timely scoring gave the visitors a 1-0 edge.
Rhodes captured the next two sets by equally-narrow margins, 26-24 and 25-20. The Colonels hit just .113 (20-11-79) across the two sets as the Lynx gained a 2-1 lead.
Centre dominated the fourth, winning by a 10-point margin to force the fifth and decisive final set. After trailing 2-1 early in the set, the Colonels ran off a 5-0 spurt and never looked back.
The Colonels were in the driver's seat in the fifth set, jumping out to a 7-3 lead and forcing a Rhodes timeout. The Lynx clawed back to tie the set at 9-9, and eventually put together a 5-0 run to end the match.
Senior Hailey Foote (Prospect, Ky.) put together a 17-kill, 17-dig double-double for the Colonels, and sophomore Keeley Morton (Bristol, Tenn.) followed with 13 kills and a .276 attack percentage to go with three blocks.
Freshman Kylie Cochran (Buckner, Ky.) totaled 46 assists and 15 digs from the setter position. Senior Morgan Babey (LaGrange, Ky.) and sophomore Peyton Vacala (Savannah, Ga.) led the Colonels with 19 digs apiece.
Centre will look to snap its five-match skid on the road against Transy this Tuesday. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
