Centre volleyball loses at Transylvania in rivalry matchup
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Centre volleyball team's three-week road trip came to a close on Tuesday with a matchup against the Transylvania Pioneers. The Colonels wrapped up the long slate of road games with a loss to the Pioneers in straight sets.
Transylvania took the early lead in the opening set before Centre utilized a 7-1 run midway through the frame to take a 17-16 lead. The Pioneers rebounded to take a four-point lead before another Colonels rally, capped by an ace from senior Morgan Babey (LaGrange, Ky.) to tie the score at 23-23, but the home team came through with the last two kills to take a 25-23 win.
The second set played out in a similar fashion, with the Pioneers in control early before a Centre run halfway through. This time the Colonels' rally went to the tune of six consecutive points to turn a three-point deficit into a three-point lead at 18-15. Once again Transylvania made a run, forcing a set point at 24-22. The Colonels fought off two set points to tie it at 24-24, and then another when they knotted the score at 25-all, but the Pioneers finally put together the winning points, taking the second set by a score of 27-25.
In the final set, Centre used the serving of sophomore Rylee Bledsoe (Timberlake, N.C.) to take a 17-14 lead after again falling behind early. The Pioneers scored ten of the next 13 points to force match point, and while senior Hailey Foote (Prospect, Ky.) saved Centre from losing with a kill, Transy quickly put away the next point to make it 25-21 and take the third set.
Hailey Foote provided a game high 13 kills for the Colonels. Freshman Kylie Cochran (Buckner, Ky.) delivered 30 assists for the Colonels in defeat. Morgan Babey led all players with 14 digs, while Foote and sophomore Peyton Vacala (Savannah, Ga.) each added ten digs for Centre.
After seven straight games away from Danville, the Centre volleyball will return home for the first of eight consecutive matches in Alumni Gym when they host the Millsaps Majors at noon on Saturday. Centre and Millsaps split their meetings last year, with the home team holding serve each time.
