DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre volleyball team stopped a six-match losing streak on Saturday afternoon when they defeated the Millsaps Majors in four sets inside a warm Alumni Gym.
The opening set was the most closely contested of the four, featuring eight lead changes and 16 ties, with neither team leading by more than four points for the duration. Centre fought off three set points before Millsaps finally put two straight points together, winning 28-26. From here, the Colonels would take control of the match for good.
In the second set, Centre gradually built its lead with tremendous efficiency, committing only one error during the set. The Colonels put the set away with a 25-13 victory.
The Colonels utilized a run of ten consecutive points to break open the third set before holding off a late Millsaps rally. The Majors fought off the set point on five separate times, but the Colonels finally scored the winning point to take the lead in the match, 25-19.
In the final set, Centre benefited from a pair of 5-0 runs thanks to the serving of seniors Morgan Babey (Louisville, Ky.) and Zoe Doubles (Troutville, Va.). Sophomore Peyton Vacala (Savannah, Ga.) and freshman Kylie Cochran (Buckner, Ky.) blocked the Majors' final scoring attempt to take a 25-15 win and finish off the match.
Centre had a balanced attack, with Vacala, senior Hailey Foote (Prospect, Ky.), sophomore Keeley Morton (Bristol, Tenn.) and freshman Savanna Roper (Hendersonville, N.C.) all finishing with a team high eight kills. Cochran had 31 assists on the day, representing a game high. Babey finished with 15 digs to lead all players, with Vacala and Cochran finishing with double digit digs. Babey also led the Colonels with three aces in the match.
The Colonels will be back in action on Sunday when they welcome the Panthers of Birmingham Southern to Alumni Gym. The Panthers won each of their meetings against the Colonels in 2016.
