Centre volleyball falls to BSC in five sets

DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre volleyball team had its second Southern Athletic Association home game in as many days when the Colonels welcomed Birmingham Southern to Alumni Gym. The match went the distance, with the visiting Panthers defeating the Colonels in five sets.

The first set was a very closely contested affair, with eleven ties and six lead changes. Neither team was able to string together more than three points in a row for the entire set until a 4-0 run put the Colonels at a 25-24 set point. A disputed call at the net went to a coach's challenge and went in favor of the Colonels to give Centre a 26-24 win.

The Panthers held a small lead for most of the second set, taking their biggest lead at 23-17. The Colonels cut the lead to four, but BSC scored the next two points to take the set by a score of 25-19 and even the match.

In the critical third set, both teams went on significant runs in the second half of the set, with Centre overcoming a 21-17 deficit to force a set point at 24-23. The Panthers rebounded to force their own set point, but the Colonels fought it off and took at 26-25 lead. An ace by senior Morgan Babey (LaGrange, Ky.) gave Centre a 27-25 win and gave them a 2-1 advantage in the match.

Birmingham Southern stormed out of the gates in the fourth set with the match on the line, taking an early ten-point lead and never looking back, pushing the match to its fifth and final set with a 25-11 win.

Trailing 12-8 in the fifth set, the Colonels rallied to cut the deficit in half, but could not get any closer as the Panthers put away the final three points to take the set with a 15-10 victory.

Senior Hailey Foote (Prospect, Ky.) led the Colonels with 14 kills, followed by sophomore Peyton Vacala (Savannah, Ga.) with 13 kills. Freshman Kylie Cochran (Buckner, Ky.) paced Centre with 27 assists. Morgan Babey posted a team high 17 digs, while Cochran and Vacala each hit double digits with ten digs apiece.

The Colonels will return to action with a midweek home game. They will face the Sewanee Tigers on Tuesday evening with a 5:30 start time in Alumni Gym.
