Colonels defeat Oglethorpe in straight sets
DANVILLE, Ky. – Playing in its fifth home game in a row, the Centre volleyball team welcomed the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels to Alumni Gym. The Colonels improved to 3-3 in Southern Athletic Association contests with a 3-0 victory over Oglethorpe.
The opening set saw the Colonels gradually build its lead while taking advantage of Oglethorpe errors. Centre led by as many as ten points before eventually pulling away for a 25-16 win, with an ace from freshman Kylie Cochran (Buckner, Ky.) representing the final point for the Colonels.
In the second set, Centre held a small lead early on before the Petrels rallied to tie the score at 21-21. The Colonels rebounded in the final stages of the set, with freshman Savanna Roper (Hendersonville, N.C.) putting home the final kill on a 25-22 Centre victory.
With their backs against the wall, Oglethorpe took the early lead in the third set. Centre eventually regrouped, scoring nine points in a row to take a 14-11 lead and never looked back, eventually winning by a score of 25-20.
Senior Hailey Foote (Prospect, Ky.) paced the Colonels with 11 kills on the day, with sophomore Keeley Morton (Bristol, Tenn.) and freshman Perrin Long (Covington, Ky.) adding seven kills each. Foote also led the Colonels with 15 digs, with sophomore Peyton Vacala (Savannah, Ga.) and Kylie Cochran each posting double digit digs. Cochran finished with a game high 31 assists.
The Centre volleyball team will be back in action on Sunday as they host Berry and Piedmont in tri-match action. The Colonels split their meetings with Berry in 2016, while this will be the first match between Centre and Piedmont since 2014.
