Colonels split home volleyball tri-match
DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre volleyball team competed in its final home tri-match of the year as they welcomed the Berry Vikings and Piedmont Lions to Alumni Gym. After dropping the opening contest against Berry, the Colonels rebounded with a four-set win over Piedmont.
In the opening set against Berry, the Vikings gradually built a lead, pulling away late in the set and eventually winning by a margin of 25-15.
The second set was a back and forth affair, with neither team able to grab a huge advantage. Neither team led by more than three points for most of the match until Berry used an 8-1 run to take a 22-18 lead. The teams traded the next six points, with Centre fending off two set points before eventually falling by a score of 25-22.
The third set played out in a similar manner as the first, with Berry jumping out to the early lead. The Colonels fought off a match point on four separate occasions, but Berry's early lead proved to be too much and they took the match with a 25-19 victory.
Senior Hailey Foote (Prospect, Ky.) and sophomore Keeley Morton (Bristol, Tenn.) led the way for Centre with eight kills each. Freshman Kylie Cochran (Buckner, Ky.) recorded 26 of Centre's 28 assists. Senior Morgan Babey (LaGrange, Ky.) paced the Colonels with nine digs.
Against Piedmont, the opening set saw the Colonels take the early lead at 11-4. The Lions chipped away at the lead, eventually pulling to within two points at 21-19, but the Colonels withstood the rally and scored four of the next five points to take a 25-20 victory.
The second set played out in similar fashion, with Centre building a cushion of five points and keeping it until the Lions made a late rally, this time tying the score at 23-23. Morton gave the Colonels the lead with a clutch kill and then slammed the door on the 25-23 Centre win with a block to close the set.
Looking to close out the match in the third set, the Colonels fell behind early against the Lions and couldn't get over the hump as Piedmont extended the match with a 25-23 win.
In the fourth set, the Colonels stormed out of the gates with a 12-2 run to start and maintained the lead throughout, with freshman Savanna Roper (Hendersonville, N.C.) putting home the final kill on a 25-16 Centre win.
Foote once again led the Colonels with a game high 14 kills, followed by Morton with 13 and Roper with 11. Cochran finished with 39 assists to lead all players. Morgan Babey paced Centre with 14 digs, with Cochran, sophomore Peyton Vacala (Savannah, Ga.) and junior Savannah Guenther (Mount Dora, Fla.) all finishing with double digit digs.
The Colonels' seven-game home stretch will come to a close on Wednesday as Centre takes on the Thorobreds of Kentucky State University in Alumni Gym at 6 PM.
