Colonels drop five-set road tilt at Millsaps
JACKSON, Miss. – After playing their last eight contests at home, the Centre volleyball took to the road for their second matchup of 2017 against the Millsaps Majors. For the seventh time this season, the match went the full five sets, with the Majors prevailing in the fifth set.
The opening set saw Centre get off to a good start, using a 6-0 run midway through the frame to take a 20-12 lead and holding on for a 25-20 win as senior Hailey Foote (Prospect, Ky.) and freshman Savanna Roper (Hendersonville, N.C.) score back-to-back kills to secure the win.
In the second set it was Millsaps who stormed out of the gates, taking an early 10-2 lead and controlling the set, leading by as many as ten points before holding off a late Centre rally and winning by a score of 25-19.
With the match tied 1-1, the third set was the closest one, with neither team able to hold an advantage of more than four points. After multiple ties and lead changes, the set was in a 23-23 deadlock. Roper came up with a clutch block to put Centre at set point and then sophomore Peyton Vacala (Savannah, Ga.) put home the final kill in a 25-23 Colonels win.
Millsaps grabbed the early lead in the fourth set before Centre rallied to tie the score at 18-18. Millsaps would respond with the next four points and Centre was unable to get back over the hump, eventually losing by a score of 25-21 as the match moved to the fifth and deciding set.
In the fifth set, the Majors opened with a huge rally, jumping out to an 8-1 advantage and never looking back, eventually falling by a score of 15-6.
Hailey Foote tied a season high with 19 kills. Freshman Kylie Cochran (Buckner, Ky.) dished out 40 of Centre's 45 assists on the day. Senior Morgan Babey (LaGrange, Ky.) tied a career high with 28 digs in the match, with Vacala, Foote and Cochran all hitting double digits in digs.
The Colonels will look to avenge a five-set loss in Danville in their next match as they travel to Birmingham, Ala. on Sunday to face the Birmingham Southern Panthers.
