Colonels earn 3-1 win over Rhodes on Senior Day
DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre volleyball honored its three seniors on Sunday afternoon as they faced the Rhodes Lynx in the final conference home game of the year. The Colonels had one of their best hitting matches of the season as they defeated the Lynx in four sets.
The first set belonged to the Colonels as they jumped out to a 10-1 lead, taking advantage of Rhodes errors. The Lynx rallied to within four points, but Centre slammed the door on the set as sophomore Peyton Vacala (Savannah, Ga.) delivered the clinching kill on a 25-16 Colonels victory.
The second set was closely contested, with multiple lead changes and ties after Centre rallied from an early deficit. The Colonels took a 23-22 lead, but the Lynx scored the next three points to win 25-23 and even the match at 1-1.
The Colonels retook the lead in the third set, using a run of five consecutive points to break an 8-8 tie. Centre never looked back from there, gradually pulling away to a 25-17 win with freshman Savanna Roper (Hendersonville, N.C.) putting home the final kill.
Centre fell behind early in the fourth set, but rallied to take the lead at 17-16 after a block and kill from senior Hailey Foote (Prospect, Ky.). Once the Colonels took the lead they kept it, taking the match with a 25-20 win.
Foote and sophomore Keeley Morton (Bristol, Tenn.) each paced the Colonels with 13 kills on the day, with Morton's total representing a season and career high. Freshman Kylie Cochran (Buckner, Ky.) finished with 37 assists for a game high. Foote also led the way for Centre with 23 digs, followed by Cochran with 15 and Vacala with 12.
The Colonels will be back in action on Thursday as they face Brescia in the final home contest of the season.
