Colonels fall at Berry in straight sets
MOUNT BERRY, Ga. – The Centre volleyball team returned to the road for the final conference weekend of the season, beginning with a trip to Berry. The Colonels lost to the Southern Athletic Association regular season champion Vikings by a score of 3-0.
The opening set saw Berry take the early lead and gradually build the lead, scoring seven of the last eight points, including the last five in a row, to take a 25-15 win.
In the second set, the Vikings used an 11-1 run midway through the frame to break open a close contest, eventually winning by an identical score of 25-15 to put Centre in a 2-0 hole in the match.
The third set was a battle all the way as the Colonels held the early lead for the first half of the set. The Vikings rallied and after eight ties, Berry used a 5-1 run to finish off the match with a hard-fought 25-20 win.
Senior Hailey Foote (Prospect, Ky.) and sophomore Bailey Vernon (Old Hickory, Tenn.) each led the way for Centre with eight kills. Freshman Kylie Cochran (Buckner, Ky.) finished with 23 of Centre's 27 assists. Sophomore Peyton Vacala (Savannah, Ga.) paced the Colonels with 12 digs, followed by senior Morgan Babey (LaGrange, Ky.) with 11.
The Colonels will look to rebound on Sunday as they face the Stormy Petrels of Oglethorpe on Sunday at noon. The Colonels defeated the Petrels in straight sets in Danville on Sept. 30.
