Box Score For the first time in almost a month, the Centre College men's soccer team lost a match, falling 3-1 to Austin College in Komen Game IV, Sunday, Oct. 17 in Sherman, Texas.
The loss drops the Colonels to 11-3-1 overall and 6-1-1 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), while Austin improves to 5-6-3 overall and 2-4-2 in league play.
The Kangaroos' Chris Melton scored twice in the first half to give Austin a 2-0 lead at the break.
Conrad Osborn extended the lead to 3-0 at the 52:05 mark in the second half.
Junior Ben Van Nevel (Louisville, Ky.) scored the lone goal for Centre at the 76:47 mark off an assist from sophomore Ryan Garvey (Louisville, Ky.) The goal was Van Nevel's second of the year.
Both teams finished with 18 shots, while the Colonels had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks. Junior Chris Jackson (Oxford, Ohio) took the loss in goal for Centre. Jackson made two saves on the day and would leave the game in the 53rd minute after a collision where he ended up receiving stitches. Sophomore Zach Sosnovich (Woodbridge, N.J.) took over in the goal for the Colonels and played well as he made a huge save for Centre.
"I really feel for our guys," Centre head coach Jeb Burch said.
"A very unfortunate day with an opponent that we should have handled. But nothing went our way all game and credit to Austin for getting the goals and shutting down our attack," Burch added.
Next up for Centre is another SCAC match, this time with DePauw University Saturday, Oct. 23. Start time is set for 7 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
