Centre football out plays Sewanee in 64-13 win

The Centre football team continued to have success on the road on Saturday, October 2 as they beat Sewanee 64-13 in Sewanee, Tenn. for their third straight road win.

Six seconds into the game, the Colonels would get onto the board as the defense recorded a safety to make it a 2-0 game.

Centre scored their first touchdown of the game to go ahead 9-0 on their second drive of the game when junior running back Jonathan Pinque (Athens, Ala.) ran from three yards out. Sophomore Jordan Gay (Danville, Ky.) converted on the point after attempt.

The Colonels would score again early in the second quarter when sophomore Monte Scotton (Cleveland, Tenn.) ran the ball in from four yards out. Gay again made the point after attempt and Centre went ahead 16-0.

Sewanee's offense continued to struggle moving the ball down the field, as the Centre defense stopped the Tigers on their next two drives.

Centre got the ball back with 6:31 remaining in the first half and ten plays later junior quarterback Tyler Osterman (Monroe, Ohio) completed a pass to senior Rob Pope (Atlanta, Ga.) who scored a touchdown with about a minute left in the half.

Sewanee would fumble the ball on their ensuing drive and the Colonels were able to recover the ball. Osterman completed two passes for 18 yards and Pope recorded his second straight touchdown of the game with 13 seconds remaining. Gay converted on the point after attempt and Centre went into halftime with the 30-0 lead.

The Colonels would throw an interception on their opening drive of the second half, but Sewanee turned around and fumbled the ball on their first drive of the half.

Osterman would make the Tigers pay as he drove the Colonels down the field in six plays for 64 yards, connecting with Pope again on a four yard play to score another touchdown, putting Centre ahead 37-0.

Sewanee responded on the next drive that ended with a touchdown by Curtis Johnson, who rushed for 22 yards. The point after attempt was missed by Trey Knighton and the score remained 37-6.

Centre continued to press offensively and on the following drive Scotton would pick up his second touchdown of the game as he scored from four yards out. Gay made his sixth field goal of the game and Centre led 44-6.

The Tigers would answer again as they drove the ball 62 yards in six plays, scoring on a one yard run. Sewanee missed on the extra point attempt and Centre held the lead at 44-13.

Scotton was able to remain an offensive threat to the Tigers as he was able to score his third touchdown on the Colonels next drive from four yards out. Centre went up 51-13.

The Centre defense had a huge stop on the Tigers next drive as sophomore Beau Bennett (Louisville, Ky.) intercepted a pass. Sewanee had gone 56 yards when Bennett made the interception.

Centre made the Tigers pay on the turnover as freshman Hunter Poteete (Liberty, Tenn.) put the Colonels ahead 58-13 after completing a 67 yard pass to freshman Nick Buten (Ft. Thomas, Ky.).

On Sewanee's next drive they turned over the ball again as senior Grant Sharp (Russell Springs, Ky.) recovered a fumble, returning the ball for a touchdown. Sharp scored the final points of the game for the Colonels as they went on to win 64-13.

Centre became just the seventh team to score 60 plus points in a CAC/SCAC game.

The Colonels rushed for 229 yards in the win and they threw the ball for 312 yards, holding the Tigers to just 83 yards rushing and 135 passing yards.

Scotton led Centre in rushing with 74 yards, followed by Pinque with 42 yards. Osterman finished the game with 191 passing yards completing 16 of his 26 attempts. Pope caught five passes for 53 yards.

Defensively the Colonels were led by junior Ryan Gallas (Prospect, Ky.) who had 6.5 tackles, one tackle for a loss, and he also had a fumble return.

Today, Centre became just the seventh team to score 60 plus points in a CAC/SCAC game. The Colonels also scored 60 plus points in their game against Fisk on October, 29 1983 in a 65-0 win and on November, 12 1983 when they beat Southwestern (Tenn.) 61-0. Trinity, Millsaps, and DePauw are the only other teams to record 60 plus points in a CAC/SCAC game.

Next up for Centre is conference opponent Birmingham-Southern on Saturday, October 9 at home in Danville, Ky. at 1:30 p.m.
