Colonels split pair of SCAC volleyball matches

The Centre College volleyball team split a pair of Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) matches falling 3-1 to Birmingham Southern College and then defeating Millsaps College 3-2 Saturday, Oct. 23 in the SCAC East/Central Crossover #2 hosted by Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Ga.

The split, which is the fourth conference split this season for the Colonels, puts Centre at 12-17 overall and 4-8 in the SCAC.

In the first match of the day, the Colonels dropped game one to Birmingham Southern 25-20 but rallied to win game two 25-23. The Panthers then edged out Centre 26-24 in both games three and four for the victory.

Senior Rebecca Pugh (Colfax, Calif.) and freshman Catherine Janszen (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the team with 10 kills apiece. Pugh also had 18 digs. Junior Hannah Greer (Owensboro, Ky.) notched 38 assists. Junior Laura Hench (Lexington, Ky.) tallied 24 digs and freshman Lydia Prevost (Knoxville, Tenn.) added five blocks and three service aces.

Centre bounced back in its second match of the day earning a hard-fought win over Millsaps in five games. After winning games one and two 25-20 and 25-14, the Colonels fell 25-17 in games three and four before finishing with a 15-13 win in game five.

Janszen had a big match with 17 kills and 26 digs. Pugh notched 12 kills and 24 digs and Greer added 45 assists in the win.

Centre will be back in action Sunday, Oct. 24 with another pair of SCAC matches. The Colonels will play Rhodes College at 11 a.m. followed by a match against host, Oglethorpe, at 3 p.m. in Atlanta, Ga.
