Football drops game to Rhodes

The Centre football team played conference opponent Rhodes College on Saturday, October 30 in Memphis, Tenn. and the Colonels were unable to hold onto the lead over the Lynx, falling 38-31. Centre dropped to 4-4 on the season and they are 2-3 in the SCAC.

Early in the first quarter the Colonels would take the 7-0 lead after junior Tyler Osterman (Monroe, Ohio) completed a 54 yard pass to freshman Rob Melillo (Louisville, Ky.). Sophomore Jordan Gay (Danville, Ky.) kicked the point after attempt.

Rhodes would then drive down the field on their first possession and score a field goal from 26 yards out to make it a 7-3 game with 11:52 remaining in the first quarter.

The defense stepped up for both sides during the remainder of the first quarter, as neither team would get on the board again.

Junior Jonathan Pinque (Athens, Ala.) put the Colonels ahead by 11 in the second quarter when he ran the ball in for a touchdown from two yards out.

The Lynx scored with 8:24 on the clock and made it a 14-10 game in the second quarter when Tyler Perkins ran from a yard out and the special teams converted on the point after attempt.

Centre would go into halftime down 17-14 after Rhodes scored on a 26 yard pass with 45 seconds to go.

The Colonels would open up the second half by holding the Lynx offense to a three and out. Centre responded by going 98 yards for the score and they would take the lead back at 21-17.

Rhodes then kicked a field goal on their ensuing possession to make it a 21-20 game.

The Lynx then got the ball back after forcing a fumble on the Colonels second drive of the third quarter and Rhodes regained the lead after scoring another touchdown with 4:02 remaining.

T. Osterman opened up the fourth quarter by scoring a touchdown from three yards out and Gay made the point after attempt to cut the Lynx lead down to four points.

Rhodes would score their final touchdown of the game with 9:40 to go in the game after going 74 yards to make it a 38-28 game.

On the Colonels next possession they would get down to the Rhodes 17 yard line and would end up kicking a field goal to take the score to 38-31.

Centre then attempted to stop Rhodes, but the Lynx were able to make the necessary plays as they went on to win the game by a score of 38-31.

T. Osterman finished the game with 322 passing yards, completing 28 of 39 passes, including a touchdown, and he also rushed for 41 yards.

Sophomore Monte Scotton (Cleveland, Tenn.) rushed for 71 yards on nine carries. Sophomore Jason Osterman (Monroe, Ohio) had seven receptions for 58 yards and junior Jordan Albright (Cincinnati, Ohio) had six catches for 58 yards.

Defensively the Colonels were led by senior Will Geisen (Edgewood, Ky.) who posted 8.5 tackles. Junior Ryan Gallas (Prospect, Ky.) had one sack and one tackle for a loss.

Next up for the Colonels will be conference opponent Trinity University on Saturday, November 6 in Danville, Ky. Kick-off is set for 1:30 p.m. at Farris Stadium.
