Colonels rally to defeat Birmingham Southern 35-28

Box Score

Trailing 21-14 after one half of play, the Centre College football team out-scored Birmingham Southern College 21-7 in the second half to rally for a 35-28 win Saturday, Oct. 9 at Farris Stadium in Danville, Ky.

The win, the first at home for the Colonels, puts Centre at 4-2 overall this year, while Birmingham Southern drops its second straight game after starting 3-0 to fall to 3-2 overall. The game does not count toward Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) standings as the Panthers are a provisional member of Division III.

Birmingham Southern scored the first points of the game on a 16-yard run by Shawn Morris on the Panthers first drive of the game.

The Colonels responded with a 10-play, 71-yard scoring drive capped off by junior Jonathan Pinque's (Athens, Ala.) one-yard touchdown run to tie the game at seven.

The Panthers answered with its second touchdown in as many drives, but Centre, once again, responded with a touchdown of its own as junior Tyler Osterman (Monroe, Ohio) found Pinque for an 11-yard scoring strike to make it 14-14.

A touchdown late in the first half by Birmingham Southern gave the Panthers a 21-14 lead at the half, but things changed quickly early in the third quarter.

Centre forced a three-and-out and used its first possession of the second half to go 56 yards on 10 plays with Pinque, again, finding the end zone, this time from two yards out to tie the game at 21 apiece.

Senior cornerback Jimmie Warren (Georgetown, Ky.) then gave the Colonels' offense the ball back when he intercepted a third-and-eight pass attempt and returned it nine yards to the Birmingham Southern 26-yard line.

On the very next play, Osterman found senior wide receiver Rob Pope (Atlanta, Ga.) for a 26-yard scoring strike and a 28-21 Centre lead.

The Panthers tied the game early in the third quarter at 28-28, but the tie did not last long as the Colonels drove 62 yards on 11 plays in 5:15 with Osterman finding his way across the goal line from four yards out for a 35-28 advantage.

The Panthers got the ball back with 3:10 left in the game and drove to the Centre 39-yard line, but a fourth down rushing attempt came up short and the Colonels went on to finish with its first home win of the 2010 season.

Centre out-gained Birmingham Southern 371-342 in total offensive yards. The Colonels had a 231-91 edge in passing yards, while the Panthers rushed for 251 yards on the ground to 140 for Centre.

Osterman finished the day 19 of 26 for 231 yards and two touchdown passes. He also rushed for 30 yards and another score. Pinque gained 97 yards on the ground with two running scores and caught two passes for 28 yards including a touchdown catch. Pope led all receivers on the day with six receptions for 79 yards and a touchdown reception.

Three Centre defenders finished the day with double-digit tackles, led by sophomore defensive back Thomas Kent's (Cincinnati, Ohio) 14 tackles. Junior defensive back Ryan Gallas (Prospect, Ky.) added 13 tackles and junior linebacker Jared Ferguson (Monroe, Ohio) tallied 10 stops in the win.

Centre will take a week off and prepare for its 2010 Homecoming game against Millsaps College Saturday, Oct. 23. Kick-off for the SCAC game is set for 2:30 p.m. at Farris Stadium in Danville, Ky.
