Colonels pull away for 73-60 win over Berry

Tied at the half, the Centre College women's basketball team out-scored Berry College 45-32 in the second half to pull away for a 73-60 win in the final game of the 2010 Country Hearth Inn/Lee's Famous Recipe Classic, Saturday, Nov. 20 in Alumni Gymnasium in Danville, Ky.

The win ups the Colonels' record to 2-1 overall, while Berry falls to 1-1.

The first half was tight throughout as the score was tied eight different times and changed hands six times. The Vikings held the biggest lead of the half at five points (12-7), but Centre quickly tied the game with five unanswered points.

Tied at 28 apiece, the two teams traded baskets to open the second half, but the Colonels then went on an 18-4 run to go ahead 48-34 with 14:43 to play.

An 11-1 run by Berry cut the lead to four points (49-45), but Centre quickly pushed the lead back to nine points (54-45) with 7:47 on the clock.

The Vikings pulled within five later in the period, but would get no closer as the Colonels pushed the lead into double-digits and didn't look back.

Centre shot 36.8% (21-57) for the game, including 47.8% (11-23) in the second half. Berry finished the game at 35.9% (23-64) and shot only 14.3% (3-21) beyond the three-point arc.

Junior Maggie Prewitt (Mt. Sterling, Ky.) led all scorers with 23 points on 8 of 14 shooting. The junior guard also added five rounds, three steals and two assists in 35 minutes of action.

Junior Lauren Huter (Louisville, Ky.) notched her first double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds and senior Angela Tronzo (Bardstown, Ky.) added 11 points and four rebounds in the win.

Kendall Davis and Erica Crumley scored 12 points each to lead Berry. Carol Lampley also finished in double figures with 11 points, while also adding seven rebounds and four steals.

Howard Payne University finished the Classic with a 2-0 record as the Yellow Jackets defeated Blackburn College 69-48 in the earlier contest.

Blackburn's Andrea Kleinsorge and Tarynn Hampton, Howard Payne's Clarissa Krum and Katy Sarem, Berry's Holly Compton and Lampley and Centre's Prewitt and Huter were all named to the All-Classic Team for their efforts.

Centre will return to action Tuesday, Nov. 23 for another home contest. The Colonels will host the College of Mount St. Joseph at 6 p.m. in Alumni Gymnasium in Danville, Ky.
