Box Score Sophomore running back Monte Scotton (Cleveland, Tenn.) had a career day and the Centre College football team defeated visiting Trinity University 26-7 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game Saturday, Nov. 6 at Farris Stadium in Danville, Ky.
With the win, the Colonels improve to 5-4 overall and finish the conference season with a 3-3 record, while Trinity falls to 3-6 overall and 1-4 in the SCAC.
Scotton made an impact right away as Centre's first play from scrimmage was a 67-yard pass to the sophomore running back to the Trinity three-yard line. Two plays later, junior quarterback Tyler Osterman (Monroe, Ohio) crossed the goal line from four yards out for his eighth rushing touchdown of the season. The extra point attempt went wide and the Colonels led 6-0.
On the Tigers ensuing possession the Centre defense forced a third and 13, but a 40-yard pass completion put the ball on the Colonels 20-yard line. Following a 10-yard completion and a nine-yard run, Trinity scored on a one-yard rush to go ahead 7-6.
Centre wasted little time answering. Scotton took the hand-off on first down from his own 21-yard line and raced 54 yards to the Trinity 25. The Colonels moved the ball to the four yard line and faced a fourth and one. Scotton converted the fourth-down attempt with a two-yard run and then cross the goal line on the next play to give Centre a 13-7 lead.
The score remained that way until the beginning of the second quarter. Trinity took over on its 27-yard line and went three-and-out. The Tigers' punt was returned by junior Jordan Albright (Cincinnati, Ohio) 55 yards to the Trinity seven-yard line. Scotton ran for three yards on the first play and then went the remaining four yards on the second play of the drive to give Centre a 20-7 lead.
After a scoreless third quarter, sophomore kicker Jordan Gay (Danville, Ky.) sealed the win with a pair of field goals, one from 20-yards out and another from 36-yards away to give Centre the 26-7 victory.
The Colonels out-gained Trinity 351-228 in total offensive yards, including a 216-84 advantage on the ground. Scotton finished with a career-high 162 yards on 23 carries (7.0 avg.) with two touchdowns. He also had the one catch for 67 yards.
Osterman completed seven of his 14 attempts for 135 yards, while brother Jason caught two passes for 34 yards in the win.
The defense tallied 9.0 tackles for a loss of 49 yards, including five sacks for a loss of 31 yards, with one interception and five pass break-ups.
Senior linebacker Will Geisen (Edgewood, Ky.) led the team with seven tackles and one tackle for loss. Defensive back Jimmie Warren (Georgetown, Ky.) had five tackles, including two for loss and senior defensive lineman Kevin Harman (Lenoir City, Tenn.) added five tackles with 3.0 tackles for loss and two sacks.
Centre will play its season-finale Saturday, Nov. 13 against LaGrange College. The game will be played as part of Senior Day as 21 seniors will play their final game of their career. Kick-off is set for 1:30 p.m. at Farris Stadium in Danville, Ky.
